Box Score Lakewood, N.J.- After days of foul weather, the Georgian Court University men's lacrosse team looked to the first full day of spring to break their six-game losing streak as they welcomed Davis and Elkins College from West Virginia to the Jersey Shore. Under the bright sun, the Lions came away with a much needed 11-9 victory.
GCU (2-7) started the game on fire as they raced out to an early 4-0 lead.
Ryder Verdoni got the Lions on the board just 45 seconds into the game as he finished a
Tanner Lee centering pass. Lee also assisted on the second goal as he set up the first of
Jake Sherman's game-high six tallies at 11:37 of the first. After
Patrick Schneck (Sr.-West Islip, N.Y.) got Davis & Elkins on the board at the 6:50 mark, it was Sherman and Verdoni who struck again for the Lions to extend the lead to 6-1 at 12:01 of the second. GCU would finish the first half with a four goal advantage at 7-3.
The second half started off well for the Lions as
Michael Saladino and Sherman extended the lead to 9-4 with 7:18 to go in the third. The Senators were not going away easily as their offense rolled with four straight goals to close the gap to 9-8 with 46 seconds left in the third frame. GCU showed their resiliency under the Senators' pressure by answering back as Sherman used Lee's sixth helper of game to double the Lions lead at 10:27 of the fourth.
Joe Ramirez iced the game on an unassisted goal with 4:09 remaining for the victors.
Georgian Court held a slim 41-38 shot advantage.
Kyle Seago (So.-Earlysville, Va.) made 15 saves for the visitors while GCU goaltender,
Austin Geissel, made 13 saves to preserve the win for the home side.
The Lions will look to keep the momentum going on Saturday, March 25 as St. Thomas Aquinas comes to town. GCU beat the Spartans twice in 2016, including an 11-6 win on April 4th, 2016 for the program's first ever win.
