Box Score 1 |
Box Score 2 Lakewood, N.J.- The Georgian Court University softball squad, sporting its road blues and serving as the "away" team on its home turf, registered a sweep of dramatic proportions as the Lions took a pair of Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) contests from Felician University, 7-6 and 11-8, on a Friday full of fireworks.
The twin-bill was originally postponed due to accumulated snow last Saturday at Felician, making the Golden Falcons (8-9, 0-2 CACC) the "home" team on this day.
GAME ONE
Georgian Court (3-15, 2-2 CACC) made the first move in the opener with a feisty five-spot in the top of the first, highlighted by a two-run blast to left by SS
Samantha Salomon (2-for-4) and a clutch three-run bomb to right-center off the bat of LF
Noel Arellano. Felician responded with four runs of their own during their initial at-bat, two of which were of the unearned variety.
The Lions answered with some breathing room in the second as C
Samantha Reilly brought in RF
Cassandra Varvaro to increase the lead to 6-4. 3B
Racquel Manzo (So.-Whittier, Calif.) crunched an 0-1 pitch over the left-field wall to slide Felician to within one (6-5) in the bottom of the third. GCU's
Lindsey Fischbach (2-for-3) promptly provided the Lions the cushion it needed in the next half-inning as she sent a screaming home run to left-center, the freshman's team-leading third of the season.
Marissa Trezza (1-4) earned her first win of the year, permitting four runs (3 ER) on eight hits and three free passes (1 K) over four innings of work. Teammate
Taylor Baloga picked up the team's first save of the season, firing three scoreless frames (2 H, 2 BB, 1 K) in the effort.
1B
Mia Montoya (So.-Cypress, Calif.) collected three knocks for Felician in a 3-for-4 performance at the dish.
GAME TWO
The Golden Falcons drew first blood in the nightcap as a three-run homer from DP
Nicole Spiegelberg (Fr.-Blauvelt, N.Y.) put them ahead, 3-0, in the first. Felician would increase its surplus to 7-2 after four frames before GCU's
Bryana Smith belted a two-run birthday blast to left, making the score 7-5 in the top of the sixth.
Felician added a lone tally in the bottom of the sixth to seemingly put the Lions away before Georgian Court exploded for six runs on just one hit and four miscues by the tarnished Golden Falcons to take an untouchable 11-8 lead in the top of the seventh.
Jessica O'Neil improved to 2-6 in the circle for the victors (5 R, 3 ER, 10 H, 1 BB, 2 K) while
Izzy Hilling (Fr.-Sussex, N.J.) was the tough-luck loser for the Golden Falcons (1.0 IP, 6 R, 0 ER, 3 H, 2 BB).
Smith (2-for-4) finished with four RBI on the day for the Lions. Varvaro (2-for-4, 2 RBI) and
Kelly Hardiman (2-for-4, 3 R, 2 2B) also enjoyed multi-hit efforts for GCU.
Georgian Court will next travel to Post University Saturday afternoon for another CACC double-dip. First pitch is slated for noon.
