Box Score 2 Clermont, Fla.- The 2017 Georgian Court University softball squad, participating in the PFX Spring Games, took the diamond for the first time this season Sunday afternoon with a pair of contests vs. Assumption College and Northwood University.
GAME ONE
A
Caitlin Mirabell (So.-Shoreham, N.Y.) sacrifice fly, followed by an unearned insurance tally, in the top of the seventh inning snapped a 4-4 tie, providing Assumption College the eventual 6-4 victory over Georgian Court in the first contest of the day.
GCU came out slugging to start the game as the Lions plated a pair of runs in both the first and second frames to take an immediate 4-0 lead. A
Kelly Hardiman ribbie walk and an Assumption wild pitch brought in two in the first inning while a
Samantha Solomon screaming single through the left side brought around runs three and four for Georgian Court.
The Greyhounds (2-0) halved the deficit in the top of the third on a two-run single to right off the bat of
Cassie Schultz (Sr.-Amesbury, Mass.). The Assumption catcher added a third RBI in the fifth frame with a bases-loaded free pass before a Georgian Court fielding blunder provided Assumption with the game-tying tally, the fourth of six unanswered runs by the victors.
Assumption's
Jurnee Serating-Ware (Sr.-Hudson, Mass.) earned the win in 4.2 innings of shutout relief (3 H, 3 K) while
Kendal Roy (Jr.-Grafton, Mass.) garnered the save with a perfect seventh frame (1 K) to seal the "W".
Jessica O'Neil (0-1) went the distance for the Lions, hurling 127 pitches in the process. The sophomore starter permitted six runs (4 ER) on seven hits and five walks (1 K) in the complete-game effort.
Solomon slugged two of GCU's four hits.
Molly Jackson and
Bryana Smith registered the remaining two for the Lions.
GAME TWO
A four-run first inning and a lopsided eight-spot in the second provided Northwood University a cozy 12-0 surplus as the Timberwolves (5-4) coasted to a 13-6 victory in Sunday evening's nightcap.
The Lions (0-2) certainly did not roll over in outing. After ruining the Northwood shutout bid with a run in the third inning, a booming
Lindsey Fishbach solo blast to left, followed by a run-inducing wild pitch, made the score 13-3 Timberwolves after four frames.
A Solomon two-run shot to left-center and an RBI groundout from
Marissa Trezza provided GCU three more runs in the fifth. Both squads smacked eight hits apiece. Unfortunately, 12 walks by GCU pitching sealed the fate of the Lions.
Vanessa Ewing (Sr.-Maybee, Mich.) earned the Northwood win, yielding three runs on five hits and walk (4 K) over 4.0 innings pitched. Trezza (0-1) was saddled wth the setback for the Lions (1.1 IP, 3 H, 9 R, 6 BB, 2 K).
Samantha Reilly shined for GCU with a nifty 3-for-4 effort at the dish. Northwood's
Sydni Pauley (Jr.-Wyandotte, Mich.) went 2-for-2 (BB) while collecting four RBI for the Timberwolves, three of which came on an opposite field three-run dinger to right in the first inning.
Georgian Court now prepares for Monday with contests vs. Minnesota-Mankato (6:00 p.m.) and The College of Saint Rose (8:30 p.m.).
