Box Score 1 |
Box Score 2 Clermont, Fla.- The Georgian Court University softball squad took to the diamond for two more contests Tuesday on day three of the PFX Spring Games, this time vs. Salem International University and regional rival, Le Moyne College.
GAME ONE
The Lions opened the day's first contest with a 2-1 lead after the first inning of action vs. Salem International. The Tigers (6-8) proceeded to pile on five runs in the fourth and another in the fifth to create a 7-5 advantage after five innings of action. The lead increased to 10-5 in the sixth stanza, highlighted by a two-run triple by Salem catcher,
Morgan Atkinson (Fr.-Bakersfield, Calif.).
GCU, as they have demonstrated thus far in Florida, came alive in the late innings by bringing around three runs in the seventh to make the score 10-8. Unfortunately, that would be as close as the Lions would get as the Georgian Court comeback seized after loading the bases with one out.
Katie Holestin (Jr.-Covington, Va.) secured the win for the Tigers, allowing eight runs (6 ER) on 11 hits while striking out four Lions.
Rosey Romick (Fr.-New Matamoras, Ohio) came in relief with a 10-6 lead and the tying run on deck for GCU to eventually lock down the save for Salem International (1.0 IP, 2 H, K).
Atkinson (2-for-3) contributed four RBI for the victors while 3B
Hanna Crew (Jr.-Canton, Ohio) went 3-for-4 at the plate.
Cassandra Varvaro enjoyed a breakout performance with the bat for GCU, going 4-for-4 with three runs and an RBI.
Samantha Salomon (2-for-4, 2 R) and
Lindsey Fischbach (2-for-3, RBI) also contributed multi-hit efforts while
Samantha Reilly (1-for-4) registered two RBI for the Lions.
GAME TWO
Le Moyne College owned a 4-1 lead after two innings in the nightcap between the two familiar foes. Both teams plated two runs in the third and one each in the fifth to make the score 7-4 Dolphins after five full.
GCU added some late-inning thunder by plating two more runs in the sixth, courtesy of a Varvaro two-run single down the left field line to cut the deficit to 7-6. The Dolphins (10-3) added an insurance tally in the seventh on a
Lauren Zazzaro (So.-Southington, Conn.) double to clinch the regional triumph.
Peyton Bellrose (Fr.-Liverpool, N.Y.) garnered the win for Le Moyne, yielding four runs (4 ER) on seven hits (1 K) over five innings.
Alexis Eastman (Jr.-Endicott, N.Y.) permitted two runs (2 ER) on three hits over two innings to earn the save.
Zazzaro paced the Dolphins with three hits (3-for-4)  and three RBI. DP
Ally Nicolosi (Fr.-Auburn, N.Y.) also went 3-for-4 at the dish for Le Moyne.
Varvaro, coming off her four-hit display in the first game, added three more hits (3-for-4) to the box score vs. the Dolphins to increase the junior's batting average to .500 (8-for-16) over the team's first six contests. Reilly (3-for-4) fell just a triple short of the cycle, contributing a run-scoring single (3rd inn.), a screaming double (1st inn.) and a scorching solo homer (5th inn.) in the effort.
The Lions are off Wednesday before returning to action on Thursday evening vs. Stonehill College (6 p.m.) and Urbana University (8:30 p.m.).
