Box Score 1 |
Box Score 2 East Stroudsburg, Pa.- The Georgian Court University softball squad, coming off a pair of five-inning victories on Saturday, made up for those abbreviated contests on Sunday as the Lions played two extra-frame efforts in non-conference action at East Stroudsburg University.
Georgian Court (9-21) needed 10 innings to defeat the host-Warriors, 9-6, in the opener before ESU (8-15) rebounded with a 3-2, nine-inning victory in the nightcap.
GAME ONE
GCU and East Stroudsburg were locked in a 3-3 stalemate after two full frames before the Warriors brought across a run in the third and another in the fifth to take a slim 5-3 advantage into the seventh inning. Still riding the high from the previous day, a confident
Bryanna Smith stepped to the dish for the Lions and laced a two-run single down the right field line and knotted the score at 5-all.
After two scoreless extra sessions, Georgian Court erupted for four runs in the top of the 10th, courtesy of RBI's from
Samantha Reilly (single),
Kelly Hardiman (single),
Marissa Trezza (double) and
Stephanie Torrence (groundout) to seal the always-tough road victory.
Jessica O'Neil improved to 5-9 on the season for GCU after compiling 8.0 innings of relief work (3 R, 2 ER, 5 H, 2 BB, 2 K). ESU's
Mary Wallick (2-8) suffered the setback in 8.2 innings out of the bullpen (6 R, 5 ER, 9 H).
Reilly topped the Lions' lineup with a 3-for-5 performance with the bat while Smith (2-for-5) and Torrence (2-for-5) each rapped a pair of hits.
GAME TWO
The home team struck first in the nightcap with a lone run in the home fourth. Looking for the 1-0 shutout, the Georgian Court offense again imploded the Warriors' plans as a two-run single from
Samantha Salomon plated a pair in the seventh, putting the Lions ahead, 2-1.
Danielle Wissinger saved the day for the Warriors in the bottom of the frame as the senior catcher singled up the middle, which brought home the tying tally for ESU.
With the score tied at 2-2, it would be Wallick that would get redemption for her game one setback as the third baseman clubbed the game-winner in the home ninth, a ribbie double to left.
Both pitchers went the distance for their respective teams with
Rachael Liguori (6-5) earning the win (9.0 IP, 2 R, 2 ER, 8 H, 2 BB, 7 K).
Taylor Baloga (2-6) was the tough-luck loser for Georgian Court, permitting three runs (3 ER) on 13 hits and walk (5 K).
Reilly enjoyed another three-hit effort for the Lions (3-for-4) while Salomon went 2-for-5.
GCU returns home Monday for a non-conference twin-bill vs. Mercy College (2:30 p.m.).
