Box Score 2 Lakewood, N.J.- The Georgian Court University softball squad took the field in another key Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader Thursday afternoon as the Lions suffered a split vs. University of the Sciences. The Lions fell to to the visiting Devils in the opener 5-2, before fighting back for a 6-3 victory in the nightcap.
GCU (12-6, 9-11 CACC) currently owns the eighth-and-final spot in the CACC postseason standings. USciences posts a record of 5-27 (4-16 CACC) after Thursday's action.
GAME ONE
The Lions owned a slim 2-0 advantage after five full innings before the Devils hexed the home team with three tallies in the sixth and two more in the seventh to escape with the 5-2 upset victory. 
Kaitlyn Gaynor (So.-Berlin, N.J.) earned her first win of the year for USciences (1-9) after going the distance in the victory (7.0 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 11 K). 
Jessica O'Neil fell to 6-11 for the Lions after permitting five runs (2 ER) on nine hits over seven full frames. The GCU ace did not walk a single batter, while striking out a season-high seven Devils in the effort.
Cassandra Varvaro topped the Georgian Court lineup with a 2-for-3 performance with an RBI and stolen base.
GAME TWO
The Devils carried the momentum of their game one win into the nightcap, taking a 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the second inning. The home team finally showed some pop in the third as 
Marissa Trezza and 
Stephanie Torrence provided RBI knocks to go along with an unearned tally to make it 3-2 Lions.
A 
Samantha Salomon double down the left-field line brought around another run to put GCU ahead by two after four frames. USciences answered with a run in the top of the fifth before 
Bryana Smith and 
Samantha Reilly put the game out of reach with long back-to-back dingers in the home-half of the sixth. For Smith, it marked the senior's third long ball of the year. Reilly's smash gives the sophomore eight on the season, which ties her for the CACC lead.
Taylor Baloga earned the complete-game win for the Lions (7.0 IP, 3 R, 1 ER, 8 H, 4 K), improving to 3-8 on the campaign . GCU pitching combined for 11 strikeouts over 14 innings while not permitting any free passes on the day.
Alexandria Jackson (Fr.-Indianapolis, Ind.) fell to 1-6 for USciences, yielding five runs (4 ER) on nine hits and three walks over 5.0 innings pitched.
Georgian Court returns to action with another CACC twin-bill this Saturday, this time at Philadelphia University. First pitch is slated for 12:00 p.m.
