Box Score Lakewood, N.J - On a day more befitting of water polo than lacrosse, the Georgian Court University men's squad hosted American International College in nothing short of a typhoon Tuesday afternoon as the visiting Yellow Jackets escaped with a stinging 10-9 victory in overtime.
The victory marked the first of the season for AIC (1-16) as the Lions fall to 4-11 with the defeat in what marked the first overtime contest in program history.
GCU jumped out to a 5-2 lead after the first quarter, highlighted by two goals and two assists from
Jake Sherman. Each team found the back of the net just once in the second session as the Lions entered intermission with a 6-3 advantage.
After a Sherman tally 6:54 into the third put the Lions ahead, 7-3, the Yellow Jackets fired back with four unanswered efforts to tie the affair at 7-7 with 2:57 remaining in the period. A pair of goals, from
Jeffrey Galatola (0:15) and
Troy Longley (0:05), over the final seconds of the session pushed GCU ahead, 9-7, heading into the final frame of regulation.
AIC poured in the lone pair of goals in the fourth as the Yellow Jacket defense shut down the GCU offense for the entire 15:00 to force the sudden-death overtime session.
Quinn Caesar (So.-Dalton, Mass.) needed just 47 seconds of that extra time to seal the triumph for the visitors in their final outing of the year.
Matt Sayegh (Fr.-Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) earned his first collegiate win in net for AIC, collecting seven saves between the pipes.
Austin Geissel compiled a season-high 21 saves in the heartbreaking setback.
Sherman topped the GCU lineup with his three goals and two helpers on the day.
Tanner Lee distributed four assists for the Lions in the contest. AIC's
Kevin Papineau Sr.-Westfield, Mass.), in his final collegiate outing, registered four goals and two assists.
The Lions close out the 2017 season this Sunday at home when GCU hosts Roberts Wesleyan College at 4:30 p.m. The day marks GCU's first-ever Senior Day as the squad will recognize
