Box Score 2 Wilmington, Del.- The Georgian Court University softball squad finds itself just barely out of postseason contention as the Lions split a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) doubleheader Thursday afternoon at Goldey-Beacom College. The host-Lightning struck first with a 6-2 victory in Game One. The Lions escaped the nightcap with a 9-6 triumph.
GCU (13-27, 10-12 CACC) places 10th overall in the up-to-the-second conference standings while Goldey-Beacom (13-29, 11-11 CACC) currently sits in the eighth-and-final playoff seat.
GAME ONE
Georgian Court attacked first in the opener with a run in the first and second frames to secure a 2-0 lead after two. The Lightning lit up the Lions with a trifecta of tallies in both the third and fifth innings to secure the clutch comeback win.
Alyssa Giampolo (So.-East Windsor, N.J.) went the distance in the circle for GBC, allowing the two earned runs on six hits and three free passes (3 K) to improve to 6-7 on the year.
Jessica O'Neil (6-12) lasted five innings in the setback for GCU (6 R, 5 ER, 10 H, 1 K).
Both
Bryana Smith and
Molly Jackson authored 2-for-3 efforts at the dish for the Georgian Court offense.
GAME TWO
Goldey-Beacom carried its momentum from the opener into the nightcap as the home team plated two runs in the bottom of the first to grab an initial 2-0 advantage. The Lions finally wielded their mighty bats with a six-run explosion in the top of the second. Smith and
Samantha Reilly highlighted the attack as both provided two-run singles in the frame.
GBC, not to be outdone, electrified the home crowd by rallying for four runs in the fourth to create a 6-6 stalemate. Desperate for the win, Georgian Court extinguished the Lightning by bringing in three in the sixth after a
Samantha Salomon two-run double to center and a ribbie single from Reilly.
O'Neil, pitching in relief for the Lions, earned the win (7-12) with three scoreless innings (1 H, 2 K).
Kylie Doyle (Jr.-Tower City, Pa.) was labeled with the GBC loss (6.0 IP, 9 R, ( ER, 9 H, 5 BB, 3 K), falling to 5-14 in the process.
Reilly led the GCU charge by going 2-for-4 with three RBI.
Kelly Hardiman (2-for-3) and
Marissa Trezza also enjoyed multi-hit performances for the Lions.
The Lions return home Friday to host Concordia College for two more crucial CACC contests at 2:30 p.m.Georgian Court will honor seniors Hardiman, Smith and
Holly Walker during  a special pregame Senior Day ceremony.Â
