Volkmar Sets School Record in the Decathlon

LEWISBURG, Pa. (April 15, 2023) - All but one member of Georgian Court Track and Field is off this week. The only Lion in action is Jan Volkmar. And he's doing the work of 10 Lions.

Volkmar is competing in the decathlon at the Bucknell Bison Outdoor Classic. For those unfamiliar, The decathlon is a combined event consisting of ten track and field events. Events are held over two consecutive days and the winners are determined by the combined performance in all. Performance is judged on a points system in each event, not by the position achieved.

Volkmar put together two outstanding days, winning the event and scoring 7213 points. That betters his own school record by nearly 800 points. It's an NCAA qualifying mark which is currently second in all of Division II.

On day one, through the first day and five events of the decathlon, Volkmar scored 3753 points.

Volkmar set GCU-bests in four of the five events contested on day one and outdoor PR's in all five.

Starting with the 100m dash, Volkmar won the event running 10.95. He's just the second Lion ever to break 11 seconds. That speed carried over into the long jump where he set another personal-best, 23-0. That too is second all-time in GCU history. Decathletes get three attempts during non-progressive field events. There are no final rounds. Volkmar improved on each jump with the 23-0 mark coming on his final attempt.

In the shot put it was more of the same. This time an outdoor PR for Volkmar throwing 45-8.5, just 1.5 inches short of a personal-best. Just like the long jump, Volkmar got better with all three attempts and his mark was the tops in the competition. It moved him up to eighth all-time at Georgian Court.

The fourth event is the high jump. While it's not Volkmar's specialty, he did enough today to set another personal-best. Each bar cleared is more points added to the total score. It came down to his final attempt at 5-10, but Volkmar got over the bar and secured 25 more points on that one jump. He also moved up to ninth all-time on the GCU best-of list.

Day one ends with the 400m dash where Volkmar again ran a personal-best. His time of 51.86 was fifth in the field and through five events, Volkmar has a total of 3753 points.

Volkmar picked right back up on day two. Starting with the 110m hurdles, Volkmar ran 15.65, winning the event, and not far from a personal-best.

Volkmar actually won four of the first five events on day two. In the discus he saw improvements on each throw finishing at 137-7 which is also eighth all-time at GCU.

Moving to the pole vault, Volkmar had to wait a little bit passing on a number of opening heights. When he finally came in, he ended up clearing six bars, including a new PR and school record jump 16-6.75.

With two events to go, Volkmar was already nearing his GCU record in for the overall decathlon score. In the javelin, he tossed the spear 171-1, winning his fourth event of the day and sixth in the competition.

He finished his day running 5:22.48 in the 1500, more than enough to crack 7,000 points, finishing at 7213.
