Softball To Play Four Games This Weekend at Chowan Tournament

LAKEWOOD, NJ (March 1, 2024) - Georgian Court Softball has one final stop on their season-opening spring break trip in the Carolinas.

Previously vs. This Weekend's Opponents
• These are the first ever meetings between the Lions and both Bowie State and Chowan.
• Georgian Court and Saint Anselm do have a history though.
• The Hawks are 8-2 all-time against GCU, most of that coming in early spring tournaments.
• However the team did meet three times in May of 2021 in the NCAA Regional Tournament. 
• The Lions went 1-2 in three low-scoring games. Both Hawks wins came via shutout, including a 4-0 Saint Anselm win to end the Lions season. 

Last Time Out
• Georgian Court picked up their first wins of the season Thursday afternoon at Coker. 
• The Lions offense came out swinging scoring 15 runs in each game.
• The first game needed extra innings with GCU winning in nine, 15-12. They needed just six in game two for a 15-6 win.
Adriana Mungo had a big day with three doubles and seven RBI.
Janelle Blaszka threw a complete game for a win in game two. 

CACC Leaders
Adriana Mungo's .83 doubles per game are fourth nationally and lead the CACC.
Kaitlyn Stufft is fourth in the league hitting .545 and with a .773 slugging percentage.
• Cheyenne Jackson is second in the conference with five stolen bases. She's also second nationally drawing 1.50 walks per game. 
• Georgian Court is seventh in the country scoring 8.67 runs per game.
• They lead the league hitting .333 and with a .417 on-base percentage. 
• Defensively, the Lions .954 fielding percentage is also tops in the league. 

Individual Milestones
• Jadalynn Rodriguez is one hit away from 100 and needs two stolen bases to become the ninth Lion to reach 40.
• Kaitlyn Stufft needs two home runs to move to third at GCU.
• Adriana Mungo is four hits shy of 200 and needs three more to make the all-time top-five in career hits. She also needs just one double to become the second Lion to ever hit 50.
Janelle Blaszka's next appearance will be her 40th. 
• Jayda Jones is five RBI away from 100. 
Alyssa Herrera is 15 at bats away from 450. 

About the Opponents
Bowie State Bulldogs

• Bowie State enters the weekend tournament at 4-7 overall.
• They recently split a doubleheader with Delaware State.
• In five of 11 games, Bowie State has score one run or fewer. But they've also scored eight or more in four games.
• The Bulldogs have a team ERA approaching six at 5.94. They've walked more batters than struck out with 28 walks and 27 strikeouts.
• Akirra Puellen has thrown 38 innings this season and is 2-3 with a 4.50 ERA. 
• Sydney Edmond leads the offense with a .438 average and .441 on-base percentage. She has 14 hits and 10 RBI.
• The Bulldogs like to run when they get on the bases. They have 22 stolen bases in 26 attempts. 
• Defense has been an issue for the Bulldogs who come into the weekend with a .896 fielding percentage. 

Saint Anselm Hawks
• Saint Anselm has gotten off to a 1-5 start to the season. Those games came back at the beginning of February. The Hawks haven't played since Feb. 11.
• A year ago Saint Anselm went 26-15-1 overall and 15-8-1 in the Northeast-10. They were picked to finish 3rd in the league this season.
• The Hawks lost despite getting some good pitching performances. Haile Hicks threw 23 of 36 innings and has a 1-2 record with a 2.74 ERA.
• Hawk pitchers have been throwing to contact with just 16 strikeouts. Hawk batters have struck out 29 times themselves.
• Hicks was named the NE10 Pitcher of the Week back in February.
• Also an NE10 Player of the Week was Stephanie Tardugo. She hit .313 with four RBI.
• Ava Caputo has a team-best six hits. 
• The Hawks as a team hit just .214 in their opening weekend with a .299 on-base percentage.
• Saint Anselm allowed more than two stolen bases per game while stealing just two in four attempts. 

Chowan Hawks
• The host team of the tournament, Chowan is 1-6 to start the season. 
• Like Saint Anselm, Chowan also hasn't played since Feb. 11.
• The Hawks have already seen six pitchers take the ball. Alex Bishop has a team-best 20.1 innings pitched. Haileigh Boone has a 6.75 ERA to lead the staff in 9.1 innings.
• Hawk pitchers have issued 33 walks while striking out just 14.
• Offense hasn't been a problem for Chowan Kyra Helton is batting .727 with 16 hits in 22 at bats. 
• The Hawks have four starters hitting better than .400. They team is batting .352.
• Haleigh Reid is batting .440 and supplies the power with seven of her 11 hits going for extra bases. She's driven in a team-best 11.
• Chowan is the best fielding team GCU will see this weekend. They have a .937 team fielding percentage.
