Great Pitching Leads to Lions Sweep

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 STATEN ISLAND, NY (March 14, 2024) - Georgian Court Softball went on the road at the College of Staten Island and came back home with their first doubleheader sweep of the season. The Lions got great starting pitching, worked out of a few jams, got timely hits and picked up 3-1 and 6-4 wins over the Dolphins to move to 6-8 on the season. 

Game 1 - Georgian Court 3, Staten Island 1
How it Happened

• Staten Island outhit the Lions 8-5.
• Neither team made an error in the field.
• The Dolphins left 11 on base while GCU stranded five. 
• Georgian Court got the leadoff hitter on as Cheyenne Jackson walked on four pitches. She stole second and reached third but was stranded there.
Janelle Blaszka was pulling out magic tricks in each of the first three innings to escape trouble.
• In the first, she got out of a bases-loaded, one-out jam with a line drive back to herself and a fly out.
• After the Dolphins left a runner on in the second, Blaszka struck out two batters looking to end the third with runners on second and third.
• Georgian Court got their first hits of the game in the fourth. Kaitlyn Stufft singled and Jadalynn Rodriguez doubled to put runners in scoring position with nobody out.
• The Lions got a pair of productive outs as Charlee Mae Sinderud and Isabella Molina drove in runs with outs to put the Lions up 2-0. 
• Blaszka kept firing zeroes and the Lions used a two-out rally to score a run in the sixth. Charlee Mae Sinderud put a double just fair inside the right field line and Isabella Molina's grounder up the middle got through the defense to score Sinderud.
• Staten Island got one on the board in the sixth, but it could have been more. They led off with a double and had the bases loaded with nobody out.
• Blaszka got the next three batters out, but a fly ball was deep enough to score a run and cut the GCU lead to 3-1.

Lion Stat Leaders
Janelle Blaszka allowed a run while scattering eight hits.
Isabella Molina was 1-2 and drove in two runs.
Charlee Mae Sinderud doubled, scored a run and drove one in.
Kaitlyn Stufft was 1-3 with a run scored.
Jadalynn Rodriguez doubled and scored.
Cheyenne Jackson walked and stole two bases.

For the Dolphins

• Alexandra Frenza started for the Dolphins going the first five innings and allowing two runs on two hits with two strikeouts and two walks. 

Game 2 - Georgian Court 6, Staten Island 4
How it Happened

• The Lions scattered seven hits with two doubles.
• Staten Island knocked six hits, two in the final inning.
• Georgian Court stole four bases.
• The Lions didn't make an error in the field. The Dolphins made one leading to one unearned run.
• For the second straight game, Cheyenne Jackson led off with a walk and stole second. After Adriana Mungo followed with a walk, Kaitlyn Stufft hit a two-run single to left and put the Lions up 2-0 three batters into the game.
• With two outs, Isabella Molina plated the third run of the inning with double to score Stufft.
• Just like in game one, game two started with the Dolphins leaving runners on base. Kahlen Cornell put two on, but left them in scoring position.
• The 3-0 score held until the fourth. CSI led off with a double and after Cornell got the next two out, another double got the Dolphins within two, 3-1.
• Georgian Court responded with a two-out rally in the fifth. Mungo kicked it off with a double and Stufft drove her home with a double.
Jadalynn Rodriguez kept the line moving with a single for a 3-0 GCU lead.
• GCU tacked on an insurance run in the seventh with Lia DeMaio scampering home on a double steal attempt.
• Staten Island made things interesting with two outs in the seventh. A walk and a single preceded a three-run home run to bring CSI within two at 6-4. Cornell finished the game one batter later with a ground out.

Lion Stat Leaders
Kaitlyn Stufft finished 2-4 with a double and three RBI.
Adriana Mungo scored twice with two singles and two stolen bases.
Cheyenne Jackson stole two more bases and scored.
Jadalynn Rodriguez and Isabella Molina had a hit and an RBI.
Kahlen Cornell went the distance throwing 112 pitches allowing four runs on six hits with three walks and four strikeouts.

For the Dolphins
• Kennedie Ruth gave up six runs on seven hits in all seven innings with three strikeouts.
• Aileen Balderas finished 2-4 with a run scored.
• Kassidy Latour homered and drove in three runs.
• Avery Mochrie doubled and drove in a run. 

News and Notes
• This was the Lions and Dolphins first meeting since 1998.
• Staten Island left runners on base in every inning in game one. 
Cheyenne Jackson stole a combined four bases.
• This is the first time this season GCU hasn't committed an error in back-to-back games.
Janelle Blaszka won her 20th career game. 

Up Next
• The Lions have a weekend full of games. They'll start CACC play on Saturday, March 16 at Bloomfield before returning home for a doubleheader Sunday, March 17 against Mercy. Both doubleheaders start at 12 p.m.
