NEW HAVEN, Conn. (Sept. 15, 2025) - Georgian Court Volleyball had two named to the CACC weekly award list. For their help in a 2-1 week, senior Iciar Zayas and freshman Ava Churnesky were named the league's Setter and Rookie of the Week, respectively. 

The Lions went 2-1 last week with both wins coming as 3-0 sweeps. They swept Queens and Lincoln (PA) in nonconference action for their first wins of the season.

Starting with the senior Zayas, she quarterbacked the Lions offense all week as the setter dishing out 11.22 assists per set. She had at least 29 in all three games including 39 in a three-set win over Queens, her second-most ever in a three-set game. Also in that game against Queens, Zayas recorded a double-double with 10 digs. Playing against Lincoln, Zayas got in some points as well. In addition to her 33 assists, she scored five service aces. This is Zayas's second career CACC Setter of the Week award. She earned one as a sophomore back in September of 2023. 

This week's CACC Rookie of the Week goes to Ava Churnesky. She had a huge week averaging 4.50 kills per set and 2.63 digs per set. The week started out with back-to-back 15+ kill matches. That included a career-high 17 in the three set win over Queens. She had her first double-double with a 15-kill, 10-dig performance against Lincoln to start Saturday's tri-match. Churnesky hit .190 for the week, which included a .311 mark against Queens and was at .270 against Lincoln. 

This week starts conference play for the Lions. But its just a taste as they host Wilmington Wednesday, Sept. 17. They're then right back on the road for a weekend tournament to play Queens, Southern New Hampshire and East Stroudsburg at the ESU Tournament.
