BRONX, NY- The Georgian Court University XC squad finished 12th (out of 18 teams) and topped CACC foes Dominican College (13th), Felician College (17th) and Concordia College (18th) at Saturday's Fordham University Fiasco & Follies in Van Cortlandt Park.
The Lions' top-five finishers included reigning CACC Runner of the Week
Justine Berger (38th, 20:28.00),
Allison Landry (82nd, 21:49.84),
Cassandra Lenkowski (98th, 22:05.94),
Krystal Belcher (117th, 22:48.61) and
Heather Miara (123rd, 23:02.57).
Freshman
Cynthia Cuiule, GCU's second overall finisher at last week's Monmouth Kick-off, did not finish Saturday's race after suffering a fall in the backwoods of Van Cortlandt Park. GCU was also without its fourth overall finisher from a week ago, freshman
Katelynn Colgain, who is recovering from a sprained ankle.
"Between injuries and mishaps, we were fortunate to even score as a team'" stated Georgian Court head coach Kerwin Lanz. "Injuries have plagued us this early season."
"The star of the day was Cassie (Lenkowski)," continued Lanz. "She is a great teammate, a great team player and an incredibly versitile athlete. We know that she is an exceptional track athlete, but her commitment, work ethic and team spirit have enabled her to quickly become an invaluable part of our cross country team."
"Also, our senior leadership was very helpful. Captains Heather (Miara) and Krystal (Belcher) are doing an excellent job of leading during this rough period for the team. They both raced well on Saturday. It is great to see them both excited about racing."
Next up for the Lions will be the Philly Metro Championship, September 25th, at Philadelphia's Belmont Plateau.
