Georgian Court Still Seeking First Win in FLA ... Fall to U. Mary, Lake Superior State

CLERMONT, FL-The Georgian Court University softball squad, after two days of action in the Florida sun, still seeks its first taste of victory in 2011, as the Lions fell to the University of Mary (ND), 9-0 in five innings, and a wild 13-11 defeat to Lake Superior State University in Game Two.

GAME ONE

The Marauders of UMary (4-4) jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first off Lions' starting pitcher Brooke Hull and added a five spot in the third to make quick work of GCU and marking the second consecutive game that they have been shutout and mercy-ruled (10-0 in five innings to Valdosta State University on Sunday).

1B Brooke Hageness (Jr.-Libby, MT) led the charge for UMary with a double, triple a run scored and three RBI. C Desiree Smith (Jr.-Eagan, MN) also contributed two hits, including a double, a run and two RBI.

Emily Sinclair (Jr.-Chehalis, WA) cosseted the UMary lead and earned the victory, yielding four hits and four walks, while striking out two, over five innings. Hull (0-2) suffered the loss for Georgian Court.

GAME TWO

3B Joelle Peterson (Fr.-Grass Lake, MI) drilled a two-run double down the right field line with two outs in the top of the seventh inning, to give the Lakers a 12-11 lead before adding on an insurance run later in the frame and insuring the triumph for Lake Superior State.

The Lions (0-4) had taken an 11-9 advantage just an inning earlier on an RBI double by 1B Courtney Cuevas. In fact, GCU scored in every inning but the final frame in a wild, back-and-forth ballgame.

LSSU took a 4-0 lead in the first inning off GCU starter Shannon Dukes , but answered with a three-spot of its own in the home half, courtesy of RBI doubles from 2B Rachel Ruch and 3B Kelsey Cutler.

Hull (0-3) suffered the loss in 3.2 innings of relief while LSSU reliever Felicia Gingrich (Fr.-St. Johns, MI) earned win.

Six GCU batters contibuted multi-hit efforts, including Cutler (3-4, R, RBI), Cuevas (2-4, 2 RBI), CF Jess Comiskey (2-for-3, 3 R), SS Sammie Jo Garofalo (2-4, 2 R, RBI), Hull (2-for-5, R, RBI) and LF Selina Santillo (2-4, R).

Georgian Court gives it another go Tuesday afternoon with contests vs. Gannon University (1:30 PM) and St. Anselm College (3:30 PM).
