LAKEWOOD, NJ- The Georgian Court University soccer club enjoyed a crucial come-from-behind, 2-1 conference victory over visiting Nyack College Saturday afternoon, topping the Warriors with 2:43 remaining in double overtime. The Lions improve to 6-2 in CACC competition (7-3-1 overall) while Nyack drops to 5-6-1 on the year (5-3-1 CACC).
The contest could not have started more inauspiciously for the Lions as a ball caromed off the head of a GCU defender into the back of the Georgian Court net, resulting in an own goal and an early 1-0 Nyack advantage (13:44). The Lions bounced back to tie the affair at 1-1 when
Elizabeth Lawler drilled her second goal of the year, courtesy of a
Tori Capestro assist, at 25:03.
Georgian Court's
Becky Witmer ended the game's 82:14 scoring drought and solidified the Lions' seventh victory in 2012 when she clubbed a Capestro rebound past Nyack goalkeeper Madeline Barbarino for her third tally of the season. The win marks GCU's first overtime win of the year and improves the team's record to 1-0-1 in extra minutes.
GCU goalkeeper Casey O'Connor collected six saves in the complete game effort, earning her seventh victory in the process. Barbarino registered four saves in the tough luck defeat.
The visitors held a 10-8 shot advantage over the home team while the Lions attempted two more corner kicks (4-2).
The Lions return to play at noon on Sunday with a non-conference home game vs. Lincoln University.
