Lions Look Sharp in Saturday CACC Softball Sweep Over Concordia College

Abby Merryman
Lakewood, N.J.- The Georgian Court University softball squad, coming off two miserable defeats to Queens College Friday, rebounded extremely well Saturday afternoon with a sweep of their own over visiting Concordia College in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) opener for both clubs.

In a twin-bill that was moved to GCU because of poor field conditions on Concordia's Bronxville, N.Y. campus, the Lions walked off the Clippers, 4-3, in the opener before clobbering the visitors, 11-0, in five frames in the nightcap.

GAME ONE

Taylor Boltersdorf was deemed the hero of game one as the freshman left-fielder laced a bases-loaded, two-out single to left, plating pinch-runner Casey O'Connor to break a 3-all stalemate and snap the Lions brief two-game slide.

The Clippers (1-6, 0-2 CACC) jumped out to an early 3-0 lead after LF Carly Mertens (Fr.-Freeport, N.Y.) blasted a first-inning, two-run shot to left-center before 3B Alexa Lavalle (Oxford, N.J.) scored on a GCU throwing error in the top of the second.

Georgian Court plated lone runs in the third, fourth, and sixth frames, setting the table for the seventh-inning dramatics.

Concordia starting pitcher Hannah Rubasky (So.-Nanticoke, Pa.) went 6.0 innings, permitting three runs (3 ER) on six hits and three walks, before being relieved by Caitlyn Callas (So.-Wallkill, N.Y.) to begin the bottom of the seventh.  3B Taylor McDonough led off with a bases-on-balls for GCU before leaving for O'Connor. After retiring the next batter, O'Connor advanced to second on a wild pitch. C Meghan Sfraga and 2B Justine Mattia each proceeded to reach via a walk and hit-by-pitch, respectively, which provided the stage for Boltersdorf's game-winner.

Deanna Daluise improved to 3-5 in the circle for GCU, allowing three runs (2 ER) on three hits and seven walks in the complete-game effort. The senior right-hander also struck out six. Callas absorbed the loss for Concordia (0.2 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1ER, 2 BB, 1 K).

CF Dara Schroeder went a perfect 3-for-3 at the dish for the Lions while Mattia went 2-for-2 with two runs scored. Boltersdorf went 1-for-2 with a team-best three ribbies.

GAME TWO

The Lions danced the "McDonough Mash" in the nightcap as the senior slugger blasted two home runs and narrowly missed a third when she rattled a two-run double off the top of the fence in left-center field in the second, completing a perfect 3-for-3 outing with six RBI. McDonough now leads GCU with four long balls.

GCU (6-8, 2-0 CACC) tallied three runs in both the first and second frames before putting the game away with another five in the fourth. SS Briana Molino also went 3-for-3 with three runs scored and her second dinger of the year. Schoreder contributed a 2-for-4 showing with an RBI while Boltersdorf capped her stellar day going 2-for-3 with two runs scored.

Freshman Abby Merryman (1-1) was masterful in her second start of year, scattering only two hits and a walk en route to the southpaw's first career victory and shutout.  Amanda Ramirez (Jr.-Lindenhurst, N.Y.) allowed seven runs (6 ER) on 10 hits in 3.0 IP as she was tagged with the loss.

Georgian Court next welcomes Lock Haven University to campus Tuesday afternoon for a 2:30 p.m. non-conference double-dip.
