Lakewood, N.J.- The Georgian Court University women's soccer squad, hosting Felician College on Homecoming Day for the second straight season, redeemed last year's upset defeat to the Golden Falcons by holding off the visitors, 3-1, in a less-than-ideal weather experience on the GCU campus.
The Lions powered through the rain and wind to stay unbeaten in their ninth straight contest (8-1-1 overall) while staying undefeated in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) play (6-0). Felician evens its overall record at 4-4 and now owns a 4-2 conference mark.
Both clubs battled through a sloppy scoreless first half, one in which the Golden Falcons out-shot the Lions, 5-4, and owned a 6-0 advantage in corner kicks.
GCU turned up the intensity in the second stanza, breaking the 0-0 stalemate 5:36 into the period (50:36) when
Tori Capestro one-timed a
Lizzy Kroon cross for her third goal of the year.
Felician, who always plays the Lions tough, tied the affair just 3:39 later (54:15) after
Giana DiTonto (Fr.-Lyndhurst, N.J.) netted her first collegiate goal off a rebound of an initial shot.
The score would remain knotted until 79:02 when
Tayler Bramley collected her sixth of the season after burying a touch from Kroon off a previously blocked shot.
Morgan Peacock sealed the victory at 81:10 when she scorched a deflected free ball for her first of the year.
Georgian Court dominated in the shot column with a 14-5 advantage in the second half, while owning a 7-1 surplus in corner kicks.
Casey O'Connor improves to 8-1-1 in the Lions' net, securing three saves in the always-important conference win.
The Lions take a day off before returning to the pitch Monday afternoon with a non-conference home game vs. St. Thomas Aquinas College. Start time is set for 3:00 p.m.
