Lakewood, N.J.- Another day, another sweep! The Georgian Court University softball squad completed its fourth Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) sweep Thursday afternoon, sinking the Clippers of Concordia College, 7-4 and 5-3, to improve its record to a remarkable 9-1 (10-18 overall) vs. conference opponents.
The doubleheader, originally scheduled to be played on the road, was moved to GCU due to poor field conditions at Concordia. The Clippers served as the home team in both contests.
GAME ONEThe "home" team Clippers got on the board first in the opener with a run in the initial frame. The 1-0 lead was quickly erased in the top of the second when GCU's
Bryana Smith crunched the Lions' third grand slam in four games, putting them ahead, 4-1, after an inning-and-a-half.
The Clippers, playing their first CACC competition of the season, evened the score at 4-4 with a three-spot in the bottom of the second, highlighted by a
Britany Lampert (Jr.-Shelton, Conn.) two-run long ball to left-center.
The score would remain knotted until the top of the fifth when
Alyssa Paradiso snapped the stalemate with the game-winning single through the middle, scoring
Dara Schroeder from second base. That was followed by another ribbie base hit off the bat of
Alycia Marsello.Â
Abby Merryman continued to shine in the circle for Georgian Court as the lefty improved to 5-4 with the victory (7.0 IP, 8 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 9 K). Concordia starter
Hannah Rubasky (Jr.-Nanticoke, Pa.) remains winless at 0-4.
Both Marsello and Paradiso each enjoyed 3-for-4 efforts at the dish.
GAME TWOConcordia (1-9, 0-2 CACC) looked to be on its way to its first conference win as the Clippers owned a 3-1 advantage after two innings. The Lions thwarted those dreams, however, as GCU plated a single run each in the third and fifth, and a pair in the fourth inning, to secure the victory.
Long balls again benefited the Georgian Court offense as
JoLei Buonanno (2nd inning) and Marsello (5th inning) each blasted solo shots.Â
Merryman again dazzled for GCU, coming out of the bullpen for her second win of the day and sixth of the season (4.2 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 4 K).
Sarah Ross (Fr.-Dunmore, Pa.) went the distance for the Clippers in the loss, falling to 0-2 on the year.
Paradiso finished the day 6-for-8 with another 3-for-4 performance in the night-cap. Marsello added a 2-for-3 showing in game two.
The Lions take the weekend off before returning to the diamond on Monday with a 3:00 p.m. twin-bill at Felician College.
