Box Score 2 Lakewood, N.J.- On a day the Georgian Court University softball squad honored its three seniors, the Lions suffered a split vs. visiting Concordia College Friday afternoon in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference action. The Lions cruised to a 9-1, five-inning victory in the opener before the Clippers stunned the home team with a five-run seventh to escape with the 7-6 road win.
GCU recognized
Kelly Hardiman,
Bryana Smith and
Holly Walker for their service and contributions to the team and University during a special Senior Day pregame ceremony.Â
GAME ONE
The Lions pounced early and often in the initial contest of the afternoon, plating three runs in the first inning and five more in the second to set the stage for the runaway CACCÂ triumph.Â
After a rough first inning in which she allowed the Clippers' lone run of the game,
Marissa Trezza settled down to go the distance for the Lions and improve to 3-5 in the circle. The freshman fought through five full frames, yielding just the one tally (1 ER) on three hits and two base-on-balls.
MacKenna Powell (Fr.-Milford, Pa.) was the pitcher of record for Concordia, falling to 1-4 on the year (4.0 IP, 11 H, 9 R, 7 ER, 1 K).
Three Lions enjoyed multi-hit efforts with the bat, including: Smith (2-for-4, R), Hardiman (2-for-3, 2B, 2 R, RBI) and Trezza (2-for-3, R, 2 RBI).
GAME TWO
It looked like GCU (14-28, 11-13 CACC) was on its way to the clutch conference sweep in Game Two as the Lions owned a cushy 5-2 lead after five full. Trezza's second long ball of the afternoon, a solo shot in the sixth, added an insurance run to the Georgian Court surplus.
Concordia (6-20, 5-15 CACC) proceeded to scorch Georgian Court for five runs on six hits and a GCU fielding blunder, leaving the Lions stunned at the conclusion.
Shayla Peterson (Fr.-Bethlehem, Pa.) improved to 4-5 for the victors, permitting six runs (5 ER) on eight hits and a free pass (3 K).
Jessica O'Neil, working out of the GCU bullpen, took the loss (7-13) for Georgian Court after allowing five runs (3 ER) on 11 hits and a walk (4 K) over five innings of action.
Trezza (3-for-3, 2 R) carried her offensive prowess into the nightcap as she clubbed two home runs, a double and three RBI for the Lions in the effort.
Samantha Reilly (1-for-2) launched her team-leading ninth dinger, a two-run shot to left-center, in the first inning.
GCU returns to action Sunday afternoon with a must-win twin-bill at Philadelphia University. First pitch is set for 12:00 p.m.
