Lakewood, N.J.- The sport of volleyball, especially at the scholastic ranks, continues to rise in popularity throughout the Jersey shore area. Teams from the Shore Conference regularly play in front of packed houses as these young people create lifetime bonds through the game they love. Georgian Court University nurtures this passion with the local community as the Lions host the girls' squad from neighboring Lakewood High School with an annual joint workout on campus.
Now in its seventh year, GCU and the Piners take the floor in the University's Wellness Center to not only play volleyball, but to also provide to the young players a sneak peek into what it takes to be successful at the college level as an athlete, student and individual.
Having (Lakewood High School) on campus is one of the most enjoyable days of pre-season," shared
Dan Sempkowski, who is entering his eight season at the helm for Georgian Court. Watching our student-athletes interact and mentor the younger players is a real treat. They show us so much support, both at practice and at our home games, throughout the season. We look forward reciprocating by giving back and cheering them on this fall in their home gym."

Steven Vanhise, head volleyball coach of the Lakewood Piners, "The relationship between Georgian Court women's volleyball and Lakewood High School is a very important and special part of what it means to be a Lakewood volleyball player. Coach Sempkowski and his team make my girls feel so welcome, what they have done for us over the years is something that nobody can take away from these female student-athletes."
