Lions Return to the Floor for Pair of CACC Contests

LAKEWOOD, NJ (Oct. 4, 2023) - Georgian Court Volleyball gets back in the swing of CACC this weekend with games this Thursday and Saturday.

Caldwell Cougars (1-11, 1-5 CACC)

Previously vs. Chestnut Hill
• Historically, the Lions have crushed the all-time series with the Griffins, leading 26-5.
• Two of those five Griffin wins though came in 2022 as they swept the Lions in both matches.
• It was the first time CHC ever defeated the Lions in Lakewood.
• In Philly last season, Chestnut Hill won 25-16, 25-15, 25-18. 
• The Lions hit just .059. Nylene Mateo led with 10 kills.

Previously vs. Caldwell
• Last year in Caldwell, the Cougars slipped past the Lions in five sets.
• GCU tied the match with wins in sets two and four.
• The fifth set saw the Cougars win 19-17.
Nylene Mateo landed a career-high 32 kills on 90 attempts.
• All-time the Lions lead the series 16-6 and are 9-1 playing at home. 

Last Time Out
• Georgian Court last played nearly a week ago, last Saturday against Bridgeport.
• Bridgeport took the first two sets before GCU won the third. The Purple Knights though won a close fourth set to win the match.
Amiyah Woods hit .421 with 11 kills in the match.
Nylene Mateo added 13 kills and Giorgia Cappelletti scored 11 as well.

Who's Hot?
• Giorgia Cappelletti has at least nine kills in seven straight matches. 
• Iciar Zayas is averaging 9.85 assists per set in her last seven matches with double-figure digs in three of them. 
• Nylene Mateo is averaging nearly four kills per set in her last two matches.
Amiyah Woods hit a season-best 11 kills in the Lions match against Bridgeport. 
Jessica Sprankle has three service aces in each of her last three matches. 

CACC Leaders
• With 29 service aces, Giorgia Cappelletti is third the league. 
• At 9. assists per set, Iciar Zayas is second in league and one of just two to be averaging more than nine assists per set.
• Nylene Mateo is third in the CACC in kills per set and points per set. 
• Chelsea Ross ranks fourth with 0.83 blocks per set.
• Georgian Court is third in the league this season thus far hitting .194.
• The Lions are also third in the CACC with 2.04 service aces per set.  
• GCU is third with 11.35 kills and 10.94 assists per set. 

Individual Milestones
• Jessica Sprankle will hit the all-time GCU top-10 in digs with seven more. Six  more service aces will also move her to eighth place.
• Alexa Houston is three points away from 100. 
Nylene Mateo is 48 kills away from moving up to eighth all-time at GCU. 
• With 17.5 points Giorgia Cappelletti will reach 200 this season.
Iciar Zayas is two kills away from reaching 100 for her career. 

About Chestnut Hill
• Chestnut Hill is off to a good start in CACC play at 4-1.
• They're most recently coming off of a four-set win over Holy Family on the road.
• The Griffins overall this season are 5-8 and were picked to finish in a tie for fourth place in the CACC South Division along with the Lions.
• As a team, CHC is hitting .124 while opponents are at .175. Those number both improve in conference only games where the Griffins are hitting .154 and opponents .130.
• Rachel Mace is the only Griffin scoring more than three kills per set. She has 148. Erik Dubosky isn't far behind at 2.91 kills per set, 137 this season.
• Mia Caporellie is among the leading setters this season. She's averaging 8.44 assists per set and also has 24 service aces.
• Mace and Dubosky are also the teams leading defenders in terms of digs. Mace is averaging 3.90 and Dubosky 3.51.

About Caldwell
• Caldwell volleyball is mired in an eight-match losing streak entering the week.
• They have been swept in five of those previous eight matches and six times overall.
• The Cougars are hitting .171 this season and their opponents attack percentage of .277 is towards the bottom of Division II.
• Caldwell is actually at the bottom in digs per set, averaging just 10.
• Offensively, the team is led by Reese Sherwood. She has 2.10 kills per set this season. She's also done something no one else in the CACC has done this year. In a four-set match against Queens, Sherwood landed 10 kills, passed out 19 assists and scooped 14 digs for the rare-triple double.
• Sherwood and Mack share setting duties. Mack leads the team with 3.77 assists per set.
• The Cougars are putting back 1.49 blocks per set and have nine more than their opponents, 64-55.
