Late Inning Explosion Propels Lions to Sweep

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 PHILADELPHIA (April 24, 2023) - Georgian Court got down in the first inning of both games of a doubleheader with Chestnut Hill, but didn't seem to be phased as they came back and easily put away the Griffins for a two-game sweep. The Lions are now 30-16 and 14-6 in the CACC.

Game 1 - Georgian Court 8, Chestnut Hill 1
How it Happened

• The Lions pounded out nine hits with three going for extra bases.
• GCU held the Griffins to just one run on three singles.
• Chestnut Hill stranded seven runners on base. The Lions left six on.
• The Griffins made three errors in the field, but none led to any GCU runs. The Lions were error free for the third straight game.
• Chestnut Hill manufactured a run in the opening scoring on a two-out single for an early 1-0 lead.
• They held that lead until the third when the Lions broke through for four runs. Adriana Mungo started it with an RBI single to score Jadalynn Rodriguez and Kaitlyn Stufft gave the Lions a 2-1 lead with a sacrifice fly.
• With two outs and two on, Taylor Barraza produced the biggest hit of the frame. An opposite field, two RBI double bring in Mungo and Savannah Simons.
• Two innings later Stufft made it a 6-1 game with a long home run to left field.
• The Lions tacked on two more in the seventh. Savannah Simons scored on a wild pitch and with two outs, Coco Dunham drove in Brittany Gable with an infield single.

Game 2 - Georgian Court 15, Chestnut Hill 3 - 6 Innings
How it Happened

• Like game one, the Griffins scored first. They put the first four on base with two coming in to score.
• The Griffins were primed for more when Janelle Blaszka entered with the bases loaded and nobody out. She got a strikeout and a double play to end the inning and escape further damage.
• Chestnut Hill took a 3-0 lead an inning later with a two-out RBI single in the second.
• Georgian Court broke through for a run in the third when Adriana Mungo drove in Jordan Mendolla.
• Still trailing 3-2, the Lions inched closer with a sacrifice fly from Kaitlyn Stufft in the fifth. Still batting with no out and the bases empty, the next seven batters all reached base as the Lions totaled six runs on eight hits in the inning. Coco Dunham's triple and Mendolla's home run were the biggest hits of the inning.
• The Lions came right back with another big inning, this time scoring seven runs in the sixth. Just like the inning before when a dropped fly ball should have ended the inning, the Griffins got the third out, but a dropped third strike allowed Mendolla to reach and the inning continued.
• After the passed ball, six more batters reached base. Savannah Simons and Brittany Gable had RBI doubles in the inning while Taylor Lipkins drove in two with a single.
