NEW ORLEANS (July 17, 2023) - Four individuals and both Georgian Court Track and Field Teams were recognized for their successes this season in their academics. Each team was named a United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-Academic Team and four student-athletes were named All-Academic Athletes.
For the team awards, the cumulative GPA must be at least a 3.0. The Lion women had a GPA of 3.56 while the men checked in at 3.08. Georgian Court's women's team was in the top 25% of All-Academic Teams and had the highest GPA of any team in the CACC.
In order to be eligible for the All-Academic Athlete award, student-athletes must have a minimum GPA of 3.25, have completed at least 24 credit hours at their institution and have achieved an NCAA qualifying mark during either the indoor or outdoor season.
Aniyah Russell represented the women with an All-Academic Athlete award. She had a 3.62 GPA in Business Administration. Russell in her senior season qualified for both the NCAA Indoor and Outdoor National Championships in the long jump. She set a new personal-best jump of 20-2.5 inches which is a new school record and was tied for the sixth-longest in the nation this outdoor season.
On the men's side,
Robbie Babson,
Jeshurun Devero and
Jan Volkmar all were selected as All-Academic Athletes. Babson, a sophomore, holds a 3.29 GPA in Business Administration. He hit an NCAA qualifying mark during the indoor season in the shot put, throwing 54-8.25. He took first place at the conference meet in the event both indoors and outdoors.
Devero is a senior Communication and Digital Media major. He has a 3.56 GPA. Devero made his first trip to nationals during the indoor season after jumping 49-4.25 in the triple jump to win the ECC Championship. He finished 13th at the national meet.
Volkmar finished his sophomore season with a 3.96 GPA while studying Psychology. He qualified for nationals in the decathlon and the pole vault, competing outdoors in the decathlon. Earlier in the season, Volkmar set a school record in the event totaling 7,213 points which was fourth in all of Division II this season.
