Lions Track and Field Sweeps CACC Field Rookie of the Year Awards

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (May 20, 2024) - The future is bright for Georgian Court Track and Field thanks in part to a pair of freshman throwers. This morning the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) announced their major year-end awards with the Lions sweeping the Field Rookie of the Year honors.

On the men's side it was Malicah Etienne who took home the award. Chiamaka Wokocha earned the nod for the women.

Etienne made an immediate impact in his first season at Georgian Court. He was the only member of the Lions to hit a national qualifying mark, doing so in the discus. Etienne competed in both the shot put and the discus outdoors with his best marks of the season checking in at 169-5 in the discus and 49-7.75 in the shot put. At the conference championship meet, Etienne scored 18 points for the Lions winning the discus through and coming in second in the shot put. He entered the Lions all-time top-10 in both events and set the school record in the discus. Last week, Etienne also recieved USTFCCCA All-Region accolades in the discus.

Wokocha also put together and outstanding rookie campaign. She threw mostly the discus and the hammer throw, but did try her hand at the javelin as well. She put up season-best marks of 122-0 in the discus, 138-8 in the hammer throw and 96-7 in the javelin. Her discus and hammer marks immediately put her in the Lions all-time top-10. Like Etienne, Wokocha was also a conference champion. She took first place in the hammer throw and also scored for GCU with a third-place finish in the discus.
