Georgian Court Student-Athletes Visit Local Schools for Read Across America

LAKEWOOD, NJ (March 11, 2025) - Last Friday was the annual Read Across America Day and Georgian Court student-athletes stepped off the field and into the classroom. Elementary school classrooms that is, where GCU spent time at Lakewood elementary schools to read and spend time with children.

"GCU athletics demonstrated Mercy in Action by being guest readers and role models to the Oak Street Students for Read Across America on March 7th. All students, GCU and Oak Street, enjoyed being together, learning from one another and growing as a community. It truly was an amazing and fun day for everyone involved. GCU athletics received an open invitation to come back as often as possible by the Oak Street administration, students and teachers," said Amy Cerreta, Georgian Court University Campus Minister and liaison to the Lakewood elementary schools and the Read Across America Program.

In addition to Oak Street, Georgian Court student-athletes also participated in Read Across America at Spruce Street and Ella G. Clarke School. In total nearly 50 student-athletes took part in the day's festivities.

Read Across America is a week-long event that promotes reading and celebrates Dr Seuss' birthday. Schools nationwide participate and various events are scheduled for the week. One of the highlights is always the guest readers. Both the Lakewood teachers and students and the Georgian Court student-athletes were so happy to participate.

Georgian Court's "Lakewood United" initiative is about getting student-athletes involved in the local community. If you're a local school or group with an interest in being a part of "Lakewood United", contact Georgian Court Director of Athletics, Dan Sempkowski at dsempkowski@georgian.edu for more information.
